Urge Florida Lawmakers to Prevent Deadly Gun Violence

Target: Ross Spano, Florida House of Representatives

Goal: Pass laws that will prevent deadly gun violence.

A mass shooting on February 14, 2018, left 17 students and staff members of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida dead. Despite this tragic event, the Florida House of Representatives rejected a ban on a select group of semiautomatic guns and large capacity magazines on February 20, 2018. The results of the vote were revealed with dozens of survivors from the shooting looking on after having traveled to the state Capitol in an attempt to turn their grief into political action. While lawmakers opened the session with a prayer for the 17 victims of the mass shooting, the vote in the Republican-dominated House was 36-71 in favor of rejecting the ban.

Students in the gallery of the Capitol were stunned by the results of the vote. “It was just so heartbreaking to see how many names were up there, especially after it was my school,” said Sheryl Acquaroli, a junior from Stoneman Douglas, through tears. In addition to emotional responses, were political takes: “That’s unacceptable,” said student Spencer Blum. “It shows that they don’t care about us.” Some lawmakers also felt strongly about the result of the vote. House Rep. Kionne McGhee, a Democrat, urged his peers to consider recent events when thinking of the bill that would ban AF-15 rifles and other guns defined as “assault weapons” and large capacity magazines. McGhee explained his rationale: “While this is an extraordinary procedural move, the shooting in Parkland demands extraordinary action.”

While many people are calling for laws that will prevent future gun violence, the vote in the House reveals that not all lawmakers are ready to consider the measures necessary to do this. Sign this petition to urge Ross Spano, a Republican in the Florida House of Representatives, to pass laws that will prevent gun violence.

Dear Representative Spano,

The nation is still recovering from the shock of yet another mass shooting that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on February 14, 2018. This tragic event left 17 people dead. Unfortunately, events like this are happening at an alarming rate in our country, while all other Westernized nations suffer far fewer gun violence tragedies.

The survivors of the Parkland shooting are calling for political action that will help them—and students across the nation—feel safe and free to learn in school. I urge you to consider very carefully the bills that are being discussed to prevent mass shootings from happening. Assault rifles and high capacity magazines are not used for hunting animals or for personal defense; they are used to kill multiple people in a short amount of time with relative ease. I urge you to pass laws that will limit or ban these items and prevent gun violence.
