End Enforced Disappearances and Save Political Dissidents from Fatal Fate

Target: Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh

Goal: Demand justice for kidnapped and murdered citizens of Bangladesh.

Eighty: this number represents the total of so-called enforced disappearances taking place in Bangladesh last year. In reality, this term is just dressing for the government-sanctioned kidnapping of civilians. Enforced disappearances typically have one common end: murder.

Most of the victims of these kidnappings are, unsurprisingly, political opponents of country leadership. Many have been taken to secret detention facilities with no authority from courts and held by various security and military factions of the government. Unfortunately, many of these detainees have later been confirmed fatalities in ‘gunfights:’ another dressed-up word for executions outside the scope of any legal dictate. Bangladesh’s enforced disappearances took a prominent role at the 2013 United Nations Universal Periodic Review. Despite widespread knowledge of these kidnappings and killings, however, the consistent human rights violations do not cease. To date, 17 men still remain missing and feared dead.

Sign the petition below to put Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on notice that the world has not forgotten these men. Demand the swift investigative action that will assist families in desperate need of answers and, more importantly, demand new policies that may one day ensure the ‘disappearance’ of these crimes against humanity.

Dear Prime Minister Hasina,

Each day that any of your citizens go without answers to the fate of their loved ones is a day of suffering that can never be regained. Seventeen families are now experiencing this immense suffering that has already impacted the lives of too many Bangladesh families.  Enforced disappearances need not be the most lasting legacy of your country.

Please use the full power of your authority to bring peace of mind and justice to the families of those struck by enforced disappearances. You could begin by establishing an independent agency or team that will focus on aiding impacted families and on eliminating this epidemic overtaking your country. On the most fundamental level, you can show the world a measure of your leadership by giving your full support to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances.

The citizens of your country and citizens around the world are looking to you to set a precedent that will usher your country into a better future. Take the necessary steps today before another life is needlessly lost and another family irrevocably shattered.
