Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Legally declare the Westboro Baptist Church a hate group

Recently, the Westboro Baptist Church has caused controversy by announcing that they plan to picket the site of a tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The group stated that the purpose of picketing the site is “to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.” This shows extreme insensitivity to the victims of the shooting, and is just another example of the group exploiting tragedies. As a response to this controversy, many are calling for the Westboro Baptist Church to be legally recognized as a hate group.

The Westboro Baptist Church has a history of spreading vitriolic messages to those who are victims of tragedies. They have picketed funerals of soldiers and public figures. They bring signs with phrases such as ‘God hates fags’ or ‘Thank God for dead soldiers’. The group has a long history of causing controversy by insulting families by protesting funerals, or by spreading messages that are often classified as hate speech to minority groups.

As the Westboro Baptist Church calls itself a church, it is given tax-exempt status and allowed to spread these hateful messages. The group has a team of lawyers which aggressively fight for the group to be able to protest funerals and disturb victims and their families. Being classified as a hate group would give authorities the legal right to silence the Westboro Baptist Church and allow others to grieve at funerals and sites of tragedies in peace. Tell President Obama that the Westboro Baptist Church should be legally declared a hate group immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama:

Recently, the Westboro Baptist Church announced plans to picket the site of the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The group intends to use this tragedy to praise God for ‘executing his judgement’. This is extremely insensitive to the victims of the tragedy, and is just another insensitive move on behalf of this group. The group has a long history of spreading hateful messages to the victims of tragedies.

I ask you to declare the Westboro Baptist Church a legally recognized hate group. They have purposely offended minority groups and people of varying religions. Their actions are hateful and offensive, and continue without any legal repercussions. The group is a hate group, and needs to be legally recognized as such.

Sincerely,

What the Westboro Baptist church is practicing is not freedom of speech or expression but voicing hate speech and behavibg in a hateful manner.
