Protect Endangered Quino Checkerspot Butterfly from Harmful Border Wall

Target: Kirstjen Nielson, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security

Goal: Don’t waive current environmental laws for the sake of the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

Environmentalists have recently revealed the Quino checkerspot butterfly to be another endangered species at risk from border wall construction between the U.S. and Mexico. Federally listed as an endangered species since 1997, they are native to the northwest region of Mexico and southern California. These insects are averse to flying over objects taller than ten feet, and the presence of a forty-foot tall barrier will make it virtually impossible for them to migrate from Mexico into the U.S.

In the early 20th century, millions of orange-and-black Quinos were reportedly seen winging their way from Baja, California to the Santa Monica Mountains. Presently, rapid destruction of their natural habitat, combined with the threat of man-made obstacles, severely challenges their survival. If concerted efforts are not made to protect them, they could quickly become a thing of the past.

The Department of Homeland Security has declared the right to ignore current environmental laws in order to facilitate the erection of the Trump Administration’s border wall. This is a costly mistake that will cause irreversible damage. With over 100 endangered species at risk, our government must take responsibility and do what is in the best interest of people and their native lands.

If we are powerless to stop this wall from being built, then let it be done judiciously and with proper evaluation and care. Every effort should be taken to “do no harm” by following current environmental laws to safeguard all living things affected. Please sign the petition below to demand that the Quino checkerspot butterfly and all endangered animals at risk from this project not be forsaken and remain protected under existing environmental laws.

Dear Secretary Nielson,

I am writing to urgently request that the Department of Homeland Security not waive our country’s existing environmental laws to hasten the border wall project. Scientists and environmentalists have made it clear that the construction of this wall bordering the U.S. and Mexico is detrimental to animals, plants, topography, and ecosystems. Experts have identified over 100 species that are at risk from this government project, and many citizens question the effectiveness and diplomacy of the endeavor.

Recently, the endangered Quino checkerspot butterfly was added to the list of species in danger from the construction. A low-flying insect, it will not be able to migrate over a forty-foot wall from Mexico into the U. S. Additionally, building this wall is harmful to the terrain and increases erosion, as well as the risk of flooding.

Carving through ecosystems with a wall threatens everything around it, making it imperative to conduct proper environmental research and thoughtful evaluation before proceeding. We have a responsibility as citizens to work harmoniously with nature for the benefit of all living creatures. For the sake of posterity, I urge you not to waive present environmental laws to expedite the construction of the border wall between the U. S. and Mexico.
