Support a Ban on Location Tracking on Mobile Phones

Target: Senator Franken

Goal: To outlaw location tracking on mobile phones without the owner’s specific consent.

The fast evolution in technology has given rise to several questionable new apps on phones that seem glamorous in spy movies, but in real life are tools more frequently employed by stalkers and violators of personal privacy. Location tracking on mobile phones is one of these questionable apps. Sign this petition and support a ban on location tracking on mobile phones proposed by Senator Franken and approved by a Senate committee.

The location tracking app has been marketed as a tool for parents to keep a watchful and protective eye over their children’s whereabouts. The software can record and send all smartphone activities, from phone calls, text messages, and GPS location, to the software owner without the knowledge of the individual using the phone. And it is not just overprotective parents who are utilizing this software; employers can also use it to monitor the activities of their employees while they are on the clock. However, as of right now, what companies do with this information once it has been collected is up to the highest bidder.

While Senator’s Franken’s proposed ban, known as the Location Privacy Protection Act, would still allow for parents to monitor their children’s phones, it would outlaw apps from collecting and selling data without the specific consent of the phone owner. Sign this petition and show your support of the Location Privacy Act and support a ban on location tracking on mobile phones.

Dear Senator Franken,

We are writing in support of your Location Privacy Protection Act, which would ban the collecting and sharing of smartphone data without the specific consent of the phone owner. This act is a mark of the privacy protection that we must seek to maintain in a digital age in which it is so easy to monitor the activities of others.

Just because it is possible to monitor the movements of our children, employees, peers, neighbors, friends, enemies, etc. does not mean that we should. It violates the individual’s right to freedom and privacy and also opens the door for future and more invasive technologies. Thank you for taking a stand against this invasion of personal freedom and privacy and for making steps to ban location tracking on mobile phones.
