Stop Construction of the Pilgrim Pipeline

Target: New York State Senators William Larkin, 39th District, Neil Breslin, 44th District, and George Amedore, 46th District

Goal: Ask New York legislators to oppose the pipeline proposed by Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings, LLC.

The proposed construction of the Pilgrim Pipeline would have serious detrimental effects on the areas surrounding it. Intended to run from Albany, New York, to Linden, New Jersey, this bidirectional pipeline would put numerous urban communities and open spaces in the path of destruction. The negative impact on towns that border the pipeline would be tremendous, and the resulting environmental damage irreversible.

Pilgrim plans to build two parallel pipelines, one to carry crude oil south and the other to transport refined oil north. The pipeline would extend approximately 178 miles, with a combined capacity of 16.8 million gallons per day. In New York, residents in 31 fearful communities are sick and tired of the fossil fuel industry releasing toxins in their neighborhoods.

Many ecosystems of the Hudson River Valley will be harmed if Pilgrim is permitted to proceed with building. Essential habitats will be in jeopardy, wetlands obliterated, and endangered animals robbed of the chance for survival. The construction process by itself instigates increased erosion that would negatively impact tributaries of the Hudson River.

The proposed crude oil transported south will come from Bakken shale, and refined product, including kerosene, will be carried in the opposite direction. Many dangerous side effects come from shale oil fracking, including toxic wastewater, depletion of water sources, and climate change from the release of methane. People residing in fracking areas have reported the onset of numerous serious health problems for family members of all ages, including cancer, fertility damage, and birth defects.

Hearing the voice of the people, New Jersey legislators voted against the construction of the Pilgrim Pipeline. All living creatures surrounding this potential project would be at risk, and New York’s state legislature must do what is in the best interest of their citizens. Sign the petition below to demand that New York legislators vote to oppose the Pilgrim Pipeline.

Dear Senators Larkin, Breslin, and Amedore,

I am writing to ask for legislative support aimed at denying building permits to Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings, LLC, for their proposed bidirectional pipeline running from Albany, New York, to Linden, New Jersey. Your support is vital for the protection of the citizens, wildlife, and ecosystems of the beautiful Hudson River Valley. This pipeline would put an important water source region at risk by depleting and polluting water. Furthermore, the proposed site is perilously close to homes and schools, increasing the possibility of hazardous health concerns should leakage occur.

Shale oil fracking has a deleterious effect on living creatures and the environment. Studies show it is causal for air pollution, water depletion, and natural resource contamination. Undue hardship would be placed upon constituents by endangering their health and simultaneously reducing the value of their home investment.

I ask that you join New Jersey’s legislation by opposing this detrimental project in order to save living creatures and protect the environment. Irreversible damage to our planet can be avoided; we must take action to protect our world and maintain habitability for current and future generations. Please uphold the wishes of New York communities at risk by voting against the Pilgrim Pipeline project.
