Protect UK’s Hedgehog Population

Target: Thesera May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Goal: Save the United Kingdom hedgehog population.

The United Kingdom’s hedgehog population has decreased by more than half since the 2000s and has continued to fall since. This is due in part to habitat loss as the rural areas the species once thrived in are turned into urban settlements; hedgehogs either starve to death as hedgerows and food sources disappear, are poisoned by the use of pesticides on farms, or are struck and killed by motorists.

We cannot allow this species to disappear. Hedgehogs are not only beloved by the UK for their cuteness, but their preferred diet of grubs, worms, beetles, and slugs helps to control those populations. Worse, they are described as “not picky” about their habitat and diet, so their decline suggests further problems with the environment itself. Hedgehogs are among several species by which the public measures the functionality and condition of the planet’s environment.

Farmers and gardeners have recently attempted to build more hedgerows and make their spaces more hedgehog-friendly, but that is only one step. More significant changes need to happen to save this species before its numbers decrease further. Sign this petition to demand the United Kingdom do more to protect its remaining hedgehog population.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister May,

The hedgehog population in your country has suffered a severe decline since the 2000s, and the numbers continue to drop to this day. Hedgehogs, who once lived in rural areas, are falling victim to habitat loss and poisoning or being struck and killed by motorists. Worse, their disappearance suggests deeper and more complex problems with the environment surrounding it, as they are not known to be picky about diet or habitat despite their preferences.

You must protect what remains of the United Kingdom’s hedgehogs. More farmers and gardeners should be encouraged to build hedgerows and stop their use of pesticides, and more rural areas should be preserved rather than upgraded to uruabn settlements. Hedgehogs are not only loved for their cuteness, but are vital to the ecosystem. Help us protect aid aid them in rebuilding their numbers.

Sincerely,

  1. Like any being, we all have our place. I agree that we should do more to help animals, such as “should be encouraged to build hedgerows and stop their use of pesticide.” It’s the right thing to do.

  2. MAKE LAWS TO PROTECT THE HEDGEHOGS HERE NOW.
