Preserve the Endangered Species Act

Target: Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Reject measures in appropriations legislation for the Fiscal Year 2018 that threaten endangered animals and weaken the Endangered Species Act.

In the midst of the many challenges facing our planet and its wildlife—including climate change and threats to biodiversity, which threaten human survival as well—the U.S. Congress is preparing to pass legislation that will weaken the Endangered Species Act and put already endangered animals at risk. Over 240 conservation, environmental, and animal welfare groups have sent a joint letter to Congressional leadership urging the preservation of safeguards for wildlife.

The provisions that would harm the Endangered Species Act and other wildlife protections are a part of the Fiscal Year 2018 Interior Department and Environmental Protection Agency appropriations legislation. The final omnibus appropriations bill for the Fiscal Year 2018 will set the path for Congressional action from here on out, and it is therefore vital that it does not undermine the Endangered Species Act.

The bills under consideration currently include measures taking away or blocking federal protections for many species, including the Mexican gray wolf and the sage-grouse. They would also take away funding for species on the endangered list if wildlife agencies are unable to complete a five-year species review on time. This is unacceptable and dangerous. Sign below to demand the protection of endangered animals and of the Endangered Species Act.

Dear Majority Leader McConnell,

As Congress prepares to pass the appropriations bill for the Fiscal Year 2018, it is vital not to allow any provisions to negatively affect the Endangered Species Act and other wildlife protections. More than 240 preservation, environmental, and animal welfare organizations sent a joint letter to Congress about this, and its importance cannot be underestimated.

As these groups said in a collective statement released by Animal Welfare International, “The conservation challenges America faces today are even greater and more complex than they were when the Endangered Species Act was first enacted. We face the reality of climate change and other enormous threats to our planet’s biodiversity, which in turn threatens our own survival as a species. Clearly, now is not the time to weaken the best tool our nation has to combat what scientists have determined is the sixth major extinction phase experienced on this planet.” I urge you to ensure the preservation of the Endangered Species Act and protections for wildlife in 2018 legislation.

  1. Remember the old adage, ” the extinction of one is the extinction of the other.” One day, it could be us.

  2. I have been dreading this since 45 was elected. He is not in our corner. We have to preserve every humane effort with all our might against his noncaring-ness.
