Demand Radio Talk Show Host Apologize for Insensitive Comments about God’s Role in Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting

Target: Radio Talk Show Host, Bryan Fischer

Goal: Demand that Bryan Fischer apologize for saying that God did not protect the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting because prayer is not allowed in public schools.

Bryan Fischer, conservative Christian radio talk show host of Focal Point on American Family Radio, made a cruel remark about God’s role in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Fischer stated, on air, that God did not protect the victims of the shooting out of petty vengeance because Americans no longer have prayer in the public school system. Fischer stated that God was a gentleman and did not go where he was not wanted. Sign this petition and demand that Fischer be made to personally apologize to each of the victims’ families about his insensitive and careless remarks.

Fischer basically called the shooter, Adam Lanza, an agent of God’s wrath who was carrying out God’s vengeance on the nation. This horrifying and truly despicable comment cannot go unchecked. It is, in essence, seeking to glorify the actions of a very sick young man and politicize this tragic event. Fischer is attempting to attach his religious political agenda to the coattails of this tragedy and gain support from those reeling from the loss, from those seeking answers for a tragedy than cannot be explained away.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, a dramatic shift can be seen among those with media attention and power. Some, like Fischer, have attempted to politicize the event and use the tragedy to their advantage. Others, celebrities such as Morgan Freeman, have gone on the record as saying that the media attention and politicization that is given to these tragic events fuels their fire, and that rather than focus on the shooter, we as a nation should be focusing on the victims and their families.

Bryan Fischer’s careless remarks were an abuse of his position of power in the media. It seems odd that someone who is so Christian would compare his or her God to a vengeful bully attempting to blackmail the nation into revering him once again. What is even odder is that we give individuals like this a platform to spew their hatred from. Sign this petition and demand that Fischer be made to personally and publicly apologize to each of the victims’ families for his indifference to their suffering and for his callousness in a time of tragedy.

Dear Bryan Fischer,

We are saddened by your indifference to the suffering of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and their families. We unequivocally disagree with your comments about the shooting and God’s role in refusing to come to the aid of innocent children because we as a nation have removed prayer from the public school system. How can you be so heartless and callous in the wake of such a tragedy?

You are welcome to your own opinions about the vengeful nature of your God, but you should not abuse your position of power in the media to politicize events such as this to push your own religious and political agenda. We demand that you publicly and personally apologize to each of the victims’ families for your thoughtless remarks and for your selfish motives behind making such statements.
