Praise Walgreens For Transgender-Friendly Bathroom Policies

Target: Stefano Pessina, CEO of Walgreens Pharmacy

Goal: Praise Walgreens for implementing transgender-friendly bathroom policies.

Walgreens has changed its bathroom policies to allow transgender customers the right to use whichever bathroom they feel comfortable with. This decision was sparked by an incident last summmer, in which customer Jessie Meehan was forced out of the ladies’ room of a Los Angeles location for ‘looking like a man.’ Meehan promptly complained, and Walgreens responded as soon as the ACLU contacted them.

“California law protects every person’s right to access restrooms based on their gender identity in workplaces, schools, and business establishments,” said the ACLU during a discussion of the incident and the new policy. However, not all establishments follow this law simply because a state has put it in place, which is not only unethical but humiliating for those victimized by this refusal to follow a law. This is especially bad news in the case of pharmacies, which should put all manner of health and well-being of patrons above all else.

Walgreens deserves accolades for listening to Meehan and the ACLU and implementing this change. Transgender customers deserve to use whichever bathroom they are comfortable with, and during a time when LGBT rights are being challenged, it is important for businesses to do the right thing. Sign this petition to thank Walgreens for finally making this change.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Pessina,

Thank you for changing your company’s bathroom policy to protect the rights of transgender customers, as well as for listening to the complaints of customer Jessie Meehan after she was rudely forced out of the ladies’ room due to ‘looking like a man.’ Your quick response to the ACLU’s demand for change is commendable, especially during a time when LGBT rights are constantly being challenged by the toxic political climate.

As a pharmacy franchise, your duty is to put all manner of customer health and well-being above others, and that should hold true for every location. The incident happened in California, but your change of policy will positively impact locations worldwide, hopefully preventing future ordeals like Meehan’s. Thank you for finally complying with the laws in place to protect transgender customers by allowing them to use their bathroom of choice from here on out.

Sincerely,
