Target: Michigan Governor Rick Snyder
Goal: Convince Governor Snyder not to pass new Michigan law allowing concealed weapons inside schools and churches.
In a sad bit of irony, the day before the tragic school shooting in Newton, Connecticut, the House and Senate in Michigan approved a new concealed weapons law. This bill would make it legal for people to carry guns with them into schools, churches, and other areas where guns are currently banned. This bill has not yet been signed by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, and recent events are making this bill even more controversial than it already was. Tell Governor Snyder that he should not sign this bill into law.
Supporters of the bill say that areas where guns are banned are actually some of the most dangerous places to be. For example, they say if anyone was allowed to carry a gun, schools would be much safer because a dangerous shooter could be stopped more easily. While in principle this sounds like a good idea, it also makes it that much easier for people to cause trouble in the first place.
Tell Governor Snyder to refuse to sign this bill into law. He would be making a bold, first step, going against the mindset of his party, in the wake of the recent tragedy in Newton. Gun control in this country needs to change, and this is not the way to do it. By refusing to sign this bill, the message will be loud and clear. The conversation in this country about gun control needs to resume, and the defeat of this bill can be the beginning.

Dear Governor Rick Snyder,
Recently, lawmakers in your state’s government have passed Senate Bill 59. As you are probably aware, this bill would make it legal to carry concealed weapons in several previously illegal areas, including schools. This law would expand the presence and access of guns, putting more people in danger.
New gun laws should not be increasing the ways people can conceal weapons. Instead, the next gun law that passes needs to be focused on making sure guns are not falling into the wrong hands. With increased attention paid to mental health examinations and thorough background checks, we can make sure violent, unstable people are not bringing guns into otherwise safe environments.
After the recent tragedy in Newton Connecticut, a law that expands the freedoms of gun owners is the last thing we need. Send the right message to your state and the world: something needs to be done about gun control, and this is not the way to do it. Please, make the right choice and do not sign Bill 59 into law.
