Justice for Elephant and Rhino Hero Stabbed to Death

Target: Joseph Boinett, Inspector General, Kenya Police

Goal: Investigate the killing of ivory trade investigator Esmond Bradley Martin, and ensure that the person responsible is justly punished.

A well known and respected investigator of the horn and ivory trade was found dead in his home in Kenya. Esmond Bradley Martin was a prolific geographer and researcher of the wildlife trade. He was known for his undercover investigations into the illegal rhino horn and ivory trades and his many wildlife conservation efforts. His body was found in his home in Nairobi, with a stab wound in his neck.

Martin came to Africa in the 1970s to investigate a massive slaughter of elephants, and later of rhinos. He also played a critical role in persuading China to end its legal rhino horn and ivory trades. Over the years, he partnered with the organization Save the Elephants, which eulogized, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of wildlife-trade researcher and geographer Esmond Bradley Martin, who has died in suspicious circumstances at his home in Nairobi. A passionate champion of wildlife, meticulous researcher and advocate of the truth, his loss will be deeply felt by his family and all those who knew him.” Sign below to demand justice for Esmond Bradley Martin.

Dear Inspector General Boinett,

The death of Esmond Bradley Martin, a premier advocate of animal conservation and investigator into the illegal ivory trade, must be fully investigated. Martin’s body was found in his home in Nairobi under extremely suspicious circumstances, and the person responsible must be found and justice served.

Martin’s death was caused by a stab wound to the neck. As the organization Save the Elephants stated in a eulogy, “Conservation has lost an important figure, elephants have lost a great champion and the shock of Esmond’s death will be felt around the world.” This huge loss cannot be ignored. I urge you to ensure justice for Esmond Bradley Martin.
