Goal: Convince Walmart to fire a security guard who shot and killed an unarmed shoplifter.
Walmart security guard and off-duty cop Louis Campbell shot and killed Shelly Frey, a young African-American mother, after being told she was shoplifting from the store. When Campbell approached Frey and her friend, they fled in her car and Campbell fired his gun at them as they drove away. A bullet struck Frey in the neck, and she died moments later.
Campbell’s explanation is that Frey and her friend tried to run him over with their car as they fled the parking lot. This fact remains to be verified by anyone else, but Campbell knows as well as any other security guard that shoplifters are not supposed to be followed. Campbell should have called the police and reported the license plate of the car, especially since he had not even confirmed that Frey was shoplifting. Even if she was, that doesn’t mean she deserved to die.
Tell Walmart to fire Campbell for his reckless actions. The company has issued a statement saying that off duty cops they employ have the right to follow their department’s protocol. It seems unlikely that protocol for fleeing shoplifters in Houston, Texas is to shoot them dead, but either way, Walmart should not associate itself with these actions.
Recently, a security guard working at one of your stores in Houston, Texas shot and killed a suspected shoplifter. The guard, Louis Campbell, approached Shelly Frey after he suspected her of stealing from the store. She and her friend took off in her vehicle, while Campbell fired shots after them. One of the bullets struck Shelly in the neck, killing her.
So far your company has issued a public statement only saying that off duty cops you employ have the discretion to follow their department’s way of handling situations. Firing on an unarmed, fleeing, shoplifter is not what police do, and should not be what your employees do.
Please, fire Louis Campbell and make sure this doesn’t happen again. Make it clear to all of your stores that these types of actions are not acceptable, and make sure your security guards are trained properly to handle these types of situations.
