Target: UK Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey
Goal: Reinstate the ban on hydraulic fracturing in the United Kingdom
After being suspended for causing two earthquakes in Lancashire, hydraulic fracturing–commonly known as fracking–has now been allowed to resume in the United Kingdom. UK Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey has announced that the push to exploit underground shale gas is based on evidence uncovered through scientific research that the “shale gas represents a promising new potential energy resource for the UK,” and that with new controls the risk of seismic activity will be mitigated. However, there is still a great concern on the environmental impacts of fracking. There is still the potential for major climate changes and local environmental impacts that can result from fracking.
In the past, health problems in areas with elevated air levels of harmful substances have been traced back to the practice of fracking. Although there are certainly notable benefits to fracking, it should not take place at the risk of destroying the environment and people’s health. Studies on the possible impacts of fracking on greenhouse gas emissions have already been commissioned, as worry over the effects of shale gas exploration continues. Hydraulic fracking involves pumping chemicals into the ground in order to drive natural gases to the surface. This leads to the contamination of water, soil, and air in these areas. Without confirmation that fracking is a completely safe practice, which it certainly does not seem to be, it should not be allowed to be re-instated in the UK (or anywhere).
Edward Davey should be condemned for his allowance of fracking to resume, and efforts should be taken to find an alternate source of energy. Fracking has been a controversial issue for some time now, and with great reason; it can cause great destruction to the environment and have hazardous health results. By signing this petition you are urging Edward Davey to reinstate the fracking ban in the UK.
Dear Mr. Davey,
I am writing to urge you to reinstate the fracking ban in the United Kingdom. With a significant amount of evidence on the health hazards and environmental dangers of fracking, it should not be allowed to take place.
I am aware of the economical benefits that fracking would allow, but it is not worth it at the cost of destroying the lives of people living in proximity to fracking areas. Especially with the concern surrounding the toxicity of fracking chemicals, and the effects on climate change, allowing fracking to resume is an irresponsible choice as an environmental leader. Please reconsider your decision, as there are too many negative effects that result from allowing fracking to occur.
