Applaud the Netherlands for Sustainable Air Travel Efforts

Target: Jos Nijhuis, President and CEO of the Schiphol Group

Goal: Applaud the Netherlands for committing to making airports 100% renewable.

The 12th busiest airport in the world is Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, which receives more than 60 million people each year. This airport uses about 175 million kilowatt-hours of energy each year. That’s the equivalent of 50,000 typical households. But now, Schiphol plans to combat its carbon emissions by launching a pilot program with three other Dutch airports to reduce their environmental footprint by running exclusively on renewable energy.

President and CEO of the Schiphol Group, Jos Nijhuis, said of the program, “One thing is certain: aviation can and must be made more sustainable.” He went on to say that for their new energy contract they “wanted nothing but sustainable power generated in the Netherlands.” Eneco Group will be delivering the renewable energy on a 15-year contract with the Schiphol Group. All of the energy used will be harvested by new Dutch wind farms and already existing sources of renewable energy.

The Netherlands has been setting the standard for renewable energy. According to CNBC, the country has plans to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. By 2023, it plans to have 16% of energy produced through sustainable sources. The Netherlands announced in June of last year that all of its trains run on 100% renewable energy. With moves to make air travel more environmentally conscious, the Netherlands continues to announce itself as a leader in sustainability. Applaud the country for its efforts.

Dear Mr. Nijhuis,

In a world where air travel accounts for so much of carbon emissions, your program to run Dutch airports on 100% renewable energy is groundbreaking. Schiphol Airport uses about 175 million kilowatt-hours of energy each year. Your dedication to make all of this energy renewable is something that all countries should strive for. In the past 27 years, the world’s output of carbon dioxide has been cut nearly in half thanks to advances in clean energy. With rates of air travel rising significantly, it is programs like your renewable energy plan that will help to keep us moving in the right direction towards environmental consciousness. Thank you for dedicating your work to creating responsible air travel. I urge you to continue to support environmental protection measures.
