Tell Fox News Host to Apologize for False Statements About Scholarships for Undocumented Immigrants

Target: Brian Kilmeade of Fox News

Goal: Tell Fox News Host Brian Kilmeade to apologize for his insensitive, untrue statements about the Dreamers Fund scholarship program for undocumented students.

Fox News Host Brian Kilmeade recently stated that undocumented immigrant students could take away scholarships from American citizens by producing “night vision video” of their crossing the border between the U.S. and Mexico. The scholarships to which he was referring are provided by the Dreamers Fund at the University of California Berkley and are set to provide $1 million in scholarships to undocumented students in 2013. The other requirements to receive these scholarships have yet to be announced by the university, yet Kilmeade reported that the only action an applicant must take is to present “footage of them in green video — night vision video — and they’ll get in free.” Kilmeade went on to address citizens by saying, “sorry…you’re out of luck.”

Kilmeade inserted these statements within the report itself and used such a tone that made it impossible to understand whether they were true or part of his own hyperbolic commentary. Not only is the night vision video footage not a requirement for applicants, but Kilmeade is also incorrect in his implications that the funds are being taken away from U.S. born students and given to undocumented immigrants instead. The Dreamers Fund was created by a private family foundation in order to provide undocumented students, many of who have lived and worked in America their entire lives, the opportunity to attend college.  Undocumented students are currently ineligible for federal loans and many work-study programs, which make private scholarships like the Dreamers Fund indispensible.

Kilmeade has abused his status as a news host to insert his own beliefs into a report without clarifying what is factual and what is opinion. By signing the petition below you are demanding that Brian Kilmeade apologize for his thoughtless, offensive statements and correct his errors.

Dear Brian Kilmeade,

Your recent comments about the application requirements of the Dreamers Fund scholarships are incorrect and offensive. You claimed that applicants only need to provide “night vision video” of their illegal border crossing in order to receive the scholarship. In addition, you claimed that these undocumented students will take away college opportunities for citizens. Both of these statements are simply untrue. A private foundation, not the University of California Berkeley or the government, established the Dreamers Fund with the purpose of providing the same opportunities shared by U.S. born students. In many cases the Dreamers Fund scholarship may be the only chance for a young person without documentation who hopes to attend college.

Not only are your statements incorrect, you inserted your own opinions into the news story in such a way that made it impossible to discern fact from your beliefs. As a news host it is your duty to provide viewers with factually correct information about current events. It is true that with this duty comes the privilege of sharing your personal take on such events—particularly at an organization like Fox News. Due to this privilege, however, you take on greater responsibility for your words and actions because they have a greater effect on your audience. Providing viewers with snarky comments about ‘night vision video’ and taking away opportunities for citizens does the opposite of informing them about the topic; it gives false information and unfairly criticizes undocumented students.

We request that you apologize to your viewers, the American public, and undocumented immigrant students for your insensitive, untrue statements.
