Success: California Sea Lions Officially Safe

Target: Michael Seki, Science and Research Director of Pacific Islands Fisheries

Goal: Praise National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for sea lion population rebound.

California’s sea lion population has made a full comeback, their numbers finally robust and healthy after nearly a century of endangerment and near-extinction. Their numbers fluctuated during that time as they faced hunting, pollution, habitat endangerment, and climate change; petitions such as this one on ForceChange have been circulated to protect them, as well as preserving the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

In this day and age, endangered species are lucky enough if they are able to repopulate even a little. But thanks to the MMPA’s strength, these sea lions were able to go above and beyond. Not only are they no longer endangered, their population is as full and robust as it was long before the species began to struggle. In addition to the MMPA, scientists and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have done extensive research in tracking the population patterns, figuring out what aided and hindered the growth of the species.

The full revival of a species once towards the brink of extinction may be called a miracle by some, but in truth it is all due to the hard work of animal conservationists and the MMPA. Their efforts have preserved this magnificent species, and they deserve full praise. Sign this petition to thank the scientists and conservationists responsible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Seki,

Because of your efforts and those of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, California sea lions have not only been saved, but have made a full recovery of their numbers. The species had been struggling and suffering for nearly a century due to poisonings, pollution, hunting, and climate change. Your scientists, with their tireless work, have gone above and beyond to not only stop sea lion extinction, but to fully rebuild their population. In this day and age, such a thing is rare given the many threats to the environment.

Thank you for helping to fully revive the sea lion population. It is hoped that your actions will serve as a prelude to more species fully overcoming such obstacles and making full comebacks. The sea lions and their preservation are a ray of hope that the planet has needed for quite some time.

Sincerely,
