Support a No-Kill Animal Control Policy in Waco, Texas

Target: Waco Animal Welfare Advisory Board

Goal: Support the city of Waco’s plan to implement a citywide no-kill policy for stray animals.

The city of Waco has recently been making headlines for numerous pieces of legislation, such as allowing the city itself to take over the animal control facility, which will effectively reform the ways in which stray animals are managed. The Waco Animal Welfare Advisory Board will soon be holding a summit to discuss the possibility of implementing a no-kill policy in an attempt to develop the best practices for caring for, and reducing, the stray animal population.

Local animal welfare groups as well as city council members have been invited. The Florida based Target Zero Institute, which helps communities implement no-kill policies, will also be in attendance. The summit will not be a commitment to such a program, but rather a way for all of the parties responsible for its development to determine its potential by looking at successful models, predicting the financial feasibility, and working with the community to place the 10,000 to 15,000 dogs and cats the city takes in each year.

Implementing no-kill policies can often take nearly a decade to successfully put in motion, not to mention the financial losses and the added strain on welfare groups to manage the stray animal population. Waco needs all the support it can get to make this vision a reality and stand as an example for the rest of the country. Please take a moment to show your support for Waco’s Animal Welfare Advisory Board as it attempts to provide animals with the respect and compassion they deserve.

Dear Waco Animal Welfare Advisory Board,

This month you will be holding a no-kill summit in an attempt to handle the stray animal population in Waco. Thank you for your commitment to ensuring that the lives of these animals are treated with care and dignity.

Implementing a no-kill policy is not an easy task, but we applaud your efforts and have no doubt that the thoughtfulness with which you have recently reformed your animal welfare system and organized this summit will ultimately result in its success.

Again, thank you for your commitment to saving the lives of these animals and know that you have our support.
