Demand Victoria Beckham Stop Promoting Unhealthy Body Images

Target: Victoria Beckham, Fashion Designer

Goal: Pull recent eyewear advertisements that feature overly skinny model.

Victoria Beckham is promoting unhealthy body images in her latest eyewear advertisement campaign by using images of a model who appears to be unhealthily underweight. Beckham posted images to her social media profile last week that feature Lithuanian model Giedre Dukauskaite. The images immediately received fierce backlash from individuals that accuse Beckham of promoting an unhealthy body image alongside her luxury products. Writer and TV host Piers Morgan commented, “Victoria Beckham’s shocking and shameful promotional image made me feel physically sick — but will have a far more damaging effect on many impressionable young girls who see it.”

This is not the first time that Beckham has received backlash about the perceived health of her chosen models, but the advertising for her brand is only the tip of the iceberg for the glamorization of rail-thin body types in the fashion world. The research and advocacy group Model Alliance recently conducted a study with both Harvard and Northeastern University that revealed that 81 percent of fashion models surveyed reported a body mass index (BMI) of less than 18.5. According to the World Health Organization, a BMI under 18.5 is diagnosed as underweight. The findings from this study were subsequently published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

The promotion of unhealthy body types through style and fashion is a public health concern. Sign this petition to urge Victoria Beckham to remove the recent images of her eyewear line from circulation.

Dear Mrs. Beckham,

Recent images promoting your eyewear line have been met with much criticism as a result of the unhealthy body type that is projected. The model in the campaign appears to be severely underweight. This type of advertisement is visible not only to your targeted consumer but also young people who are developing their own perceptions of self. Recent research by the Model Alliance, Harvard, and Northeastern University revealed that a majority of models who participated in the survey identified as underweight according to World Health Organization standards.

Please, remove the images of Giedre Dukauskaite from your social media accounts and from general circulation. These images perpetuate an unhealthy body image standard for anyone who views the advertisements.
