Target: Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan
Goal: Condemn the manner in which an anti-union right-to-work law was passed and condemn Governor Snyder for signing it.
Governor Rick Snyder signed into law a ban on mandatory union membership at workplaces. The law was proposed and passed in just six days by Michigan’s lame-duck Republican controlled legislature. The passage of the law was carried out with such speed that there was no time for Michigan Democrats or unions to react. No serious public debate occurred, no floor speeches and no hearings. The law makes Michigan the 24th right-to-work state and cripples the ability of unions to bargain for better conditions.
The passage of the law was orchestrated by a variety of conservative groups and millionaire donors. Patrick Colbeck a former Tea Party activist founded “Michigan Freedom to Work”. This group was supported by conservative figures such as the Koch Brothers, Andrew Breitbart, Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Reince Priebus. Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group known for its support of Scott Walker’s abolition of collective bargaining rights, was also a prominent supporter along with Dick DeVos son of billionaire Richard DeVos. Most troublingly, Michigan Republicans took great pains to ensure that the law could not be overturned by a democratic ballot measure. They allocated $1 million dollars to insert the law tying the right-to-work legislation to a spending provision which cannot be overturned through a ballot measure according to the Michigan Constitution.
Sign to the petition to tell Governor Snyder that such undemocratic means to pass a controversial law is unacceptable. The combination of shadowy political donors, hardline conservative groups and the speedy undemocratic manner the law was passed threatens the integrity of American democracy. Tell Governor Snyder what you think about how the law was passed.
Dear Governor Snyder,
You recently signed into law a “right-to-work” bill which serves to cripple the ability of unions to effectively engage in collective bargaining by banning mandatory union membership in workplaces. If this law is intended to improve the economic state of Michigan it does the opposite. Unions protect the right of workers; crippling them will drive down wages and ultimately destroy the middle class.
The manner in which the Michigan Republican Party passed the law was highly suspect. This controversial and divisive bill was passed by a lame duck legislature in a mere six days with no public debate, no floor speeches and no hearings. The law was also superficially attached to a spending measure to prevent the bill from being repealed by ballot measure. The push for the bill by various conservative donors and groups such as the Koch Brothers, Richard DeVos and Americans for Prosperity has subverted the will of the Michigan people.
I condemn you for signing this law that was passed in an undemocratic and immoral manner. I urge you to reconsider your support for the right-to-work law and your tolerance for reprehensible, corrupt and undemocratic behavior among members of your party which reflects poorly upon you.
I hope you take my thoughts into account.
