Punish Nestle for Stealing Water in California

Target: Xavier Becerra, Attorney General of California

Goal: Punish Nestle for illegally bottling millions of gallons of water in drought-stricken California.

From December 2011 until March 2017, California experienced one of the most severe droughts in the state’s history. It is estimated that over 100 million trees died during this time period. As California was experiencing this historic drought, Nestle was illegally bottling tens of millions of gallons of water from Strawberry Creek in San Bernardino County. This illegally collected water is sold under the Arrowhead label.

An investigation by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) found that Nestle has been collecting 62 million gallons of water per year when it is legally only allowed to collect 8.5 million. Although the board has recommended that Nestle cease bottling water for which it does not have a permit and asked that Nestle submit a compliance plan, it does not appear that Nestle will face any consequences for unauthorized water use that may date back as far as 1947.

Sign this petition to demand that Nestle faces consequences for stealing millions of gallons of water during a terrible drought.

Dear Mr. Becerra,

Nestle must be punished for stealing water from California, especially during such a catastrophic drought. If there are no consequences for these illegal actions, Nestle will have no reason to comply with water use laws in the future.

In 2015, the drought cost California an estimated $2.7 billion. Although the drought is technically over, California is still experiencing significant problems with water. In 2017, wildfires in California killed 39 people and the Thomas Fire, the largest fire ever recorded in the state of California, burned 282,000 acres of land. Many rural communities are still experiencing groundwater shortages, where dry wells mean that they do not have reliable access to clean water. Scientists have predicted that climate change will lead to longer droughts and more severe wildfires in California. California cannot afford to let Nestle steal the state’s water with impunity, especially as its own citizens suffer from water shortages.

I ask that you and your colleagues do all you can to make sure Nestle faces consequences for 70 years of water violations.

This case already went to court last year, and due to a clerical stuff up at the time of the contract it gave Nestle this loophole… The person who made the stuff-up has long since passed away.
So Nestle won their right to continue taking the water at a pittance and polluting the freshwater systems!
I wish you well with this petition as all our efforts did nothing last round.

  3. It’s so lovely to know that a company whose CEO believes that water isn’t a human right and wants to price gouge in drought-ridden countries is STEALING water in our country. This is new levels of appalling! I’ve quit buying any product made by the Nestle company.

  4. We’re still talking about Nestle?!

  5. Dawn Pettinger says:

Shame on these bloody corporate giants, who steal what does not belong to them, all in the name of greed and profit. I for one will not buy anything to do with nestle.

  6. You dumb@$$ left-wing nut jobs … put the blame where it belongs … your beloved dumb@$$ Brown. He cares more about the illegals in that state than he does his legal constituents!

    • Why are you even on Forcechange.com? It’s filled with “dumb@$$ left-wing nut job” petitions that are trying to protect our environment from people like you that I guess don’t care.

  7. gen agustsson says:

corporates out of the national parks.

  8. Remember this, corporation are greedy and sneaky. Next, they will probably try to steal the air!

  9. Consumers need to get educated about the state of the companies they “trust”. Sign on to some environmental organizations’ emails, join the Sierra Club or another club, donate to Environmental Defense Fund or another organization that has lawyers that take these companies (and even the government) to court. Don’t stay clueless and just bitch about the state of affairs. But most of all, DON’T BUY THE PRODUCTS!!!!

  10. They also steal water in Canada!
All politicians regardless of country are weak, most likely bribed and truly give a damn. Consumers stop buying your own water!

  11. Neville Bruce says:

They were also condemned back in the 70s for profiting of the deaths of babies, which they didn’t stop.

If I lived near the reservoir I’d take anonymised pics of people urinating in it and splash them over the net.
