Applaud Environmentally Friendly Transportation Barges

Target: Ton van Meegan, chief executive of transportation company Port-Liner

Goal: Praise company for developing zero-emission barges which will dramatically reduce pollution from water transportation.

Dutch company Port-Liner has announced that two zero-emission barges will be ready to set sail this August. Inland barges are an important means of cargo transport in Europe, with well over 7,000 vessels currently in service. Replacing these barges powered by fossil fuels with barges powered by green energy would significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The first barges will transport freight between the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp in the Netherlands and Belgium. Researchers at Port-Liner estimate that just 6 of these electric barges will be able to replace 23,000 trucks every year in the Netherlands. Although Port-Liner focuses on building barges, they have also developed technology that allows current barges to be equipped with batteries, allowing existing ships to become emission-free as well. Meegen has stated that this technology, “allows us to retrofit barges already in operation, which is a big boost for the industry’s green energy credentials. The containers are charged onshore by carbon-free energy provider Eneco, which sources solar power, windmills and renewables.”

Sign this petition to praise Port-Liner for creating a breakthrough technology that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Europe.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Meegan,

I am writing to thank you for your commitment to establishing clean energy in transportation. Although air pollution from shipping has been largely ignored, it is actually a massive problem. In just one year, ships in and around Europe will release 1.6 million tons of sulfur dioxide and 3 million tons of nitrogen oxides. It is estimated that emissions from international shipping are responsible for thousands of premature deaths each year.

Your innovation in improving sustainability in the shipping industry is truly inspirational. Decreasing air pollution will save thousands of lives, contribute to ecosystem stability, and help prevent climate change.

Sincerely,

Our planets oceans, forests and soils work constantly for humanity. They are acting as vast storehouses for greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. Our planet’s astounding biodiversity provides for every single human need. Humans everywhere spend every working day connected to nature; by the foods we eat from the fertile soils and the natural water we drink all come from our generous earth, and we stake our very lives upon it. Thank you very much for caring for our future.

“renewables”? Hope that means no fuel of any kind.
    Signed.
