Tell Congress to Pass United Nations Disability Treaty

Target: Republican Senators

Goal: Convince congress to vote for signing the United Nation’s Disability Treaty.

Senate Republicans have prevented the United States from joining over 150 countries in signing the United Nations Disability Treaty. This treaty, based on the Americans with Disabilities Act, states that people with disabilities will have access to the same freedoms and rights as their fellow citizens. Unfortunately, the GOP opposed the bill because they think it means United Nations officials will be interfering in United States law. Call upon Republican senators to reverse this grievous error.

In reality, signing this treaty would have no impact on American law or force us to follow new regulations. The treaty simply states that all countries must provide equal rights for disabled citizens, as the United States already does. Fear mongering among Republicans caused the bill to fail, as it did not get the 2/3 majority of the vote it needed. Some Republicans have said they even support the treaty, but won’t vote to sign it because it would make their party look weak in the middle of negotiating a deal with the president about the upcoming fiscal cliff.

It is unfortunate that we live in a country where the topic of rights for disabled people has become a Republican vs. Democrat issue. This doesn’t have to be true. In fact, many prominent Republicans, including Senator John McCain, voted to sign the treaty. Tell the GOP to stop playing games and spread the freedoms enjoyed in this country to the rest of the world.

Dear Senate Republicans,

Recently 38 senators in your party voted against signing the United Nations Disability Treaty. Once again, America has neglected to stand with other countries to promote the freedom and equality we claim to champion. Over 150 countries have already signed this treaty, and we need to join them.

Discussion about United Nations regulations has nothing to do with this bill. Rumors and lies have been spread concerning United Nations officials coming into American businesses and schools, dictating how people with disabilities are treated. This couldn’t be further from what the treaty actually says. We already provide equal rights for disabled people in this country, and this treaty is about guaranteeing that same equality to others around the world.

Please, urge each other to rethink your position and sign this treaty. The next time it comes up for a vote, let’s show the country, and the world, that Republicans and Democrats can work together to accomplish something great.
