Justice for Teacher Forcibly Jailed for Opposing Superintendent’s Raise

Target: Tony Hardy, Chief of Police, Abbeville, Louisiana

Goal: Investigate and punish those responsible for forcefully handcuffing and jailing a teacher for speaking out at a school board meeting.

Louisiana teacher Deyshia Hargrave was wrestled to the ground, handcuffed, and briefly jailed for expressing her distress at a school board meeting about the superintendent receiving a significant raise while teachers and support staff struggle. Video shows a city marshal hired by the school district handcuffing her in a hallway and telling her to “stop resisting,” as the teacher screams, “I am not! You just pushed me to the floor! I am way smaller than you!”

It is unclear whether the city marshal, who was functioning as a security resource officer, was acting on his own or on the orders of a board member. Ms. Hargrave stated at the school board meeting, “You’re making our job even more difficult. A superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, I feel like it’s a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, and any other support staff we have.” She was called on twice, and when she continued to speak she was cuffed, jailed, and then released on bond soon after. Abbeville’s city attorney and prosecutor said that he would not approve any charges brought against her, but the school superintendent’s raise was approved, increasing his salary from $110,190 to $140,188.

Ms. Hargrave’s right to free speech was violated, and this treatment of a teacher must not be allowed to stand. Sign below to demand an investigation of this incident and punishment for those responsible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Police Chief Hardy,

The treatment of teacher Deyshia Hargrave at a Louisiana school board meeting was an unacceptable violation of her human rights. Ms. Hargrave was guilty of nothing but standing up for the teachers and staff who work so hard in her school district. She should not have been handcuffed and brought to jail.

Beyond this, Ms. Hargrave was cuffed by the marshal with unnecessary force. He brought her to the ground in the hallway outside of the school board meeting while she yelled for him to stop. This was a violation of her free speech and her human dignity, and must not be allowed to stand. I urge you to ensure that this incident is investigated and those responsible are brought to justice.

Sincerely,
