Thank President Obama for Protecting Whistle-Blowers

Goal: Applaud decision to increase protection for federal whistle-blowers

President Barack Obama recently signed a new law that will increase the protections given to federal whistle-blowers. Individuals who expose fraud, waste, abuse and unlawful acts in government operations will be able to do so with less worry of retaliation from their employers, coworkers and supervisors. While whistle-blowers have long been protected, previous laws contained loopholes that allowed their employers to seek retribution despite the whistle-blower’s protected status.

Years of court rulings created loopholes in previous whistle-blower protection laws. Each time the court made a decision to circumvent a set of protections, it created a precedent that made it easier to circumvent the law in other similar incidents. As these precedents piled up the original intent of the law degraded. President Obama’s new law closed these loopholes, and once again made it safe for whistle-blowers to speak out against the unlawful acts of their employers.

Written into the new law is specific protections for federal employees who are particularly venerable to whistle-blower retaliation. Among this group are government scientists. Previously, such scientists had difficultly fighting censorship that was imposed on them by their employers. The new law will make it easier for them to fight censorship, and to make sure that important information is made public.
