Demand that the North Texas Toll Authority Return Money to Overpaying Drivers

Goal: Convince the North Texas Toll Authority to reimburse drivers who have overpaid their tolls.

A recent NBC investigation has uncovered the existence of a secret account held by the North Texas Toll Authority, with over $57,000 from drivers who have overpaid their tolls. The NTTA has made no attempt to track down drivers and reimburse them for the money they are owed. Tell the NTTA that this is unacceptable and that they must reimburse those drivers inversely effected.

Like many toll authorities across the country, the NTTA uses an electronic system and does not accept cash or coins. Drivers can either purchase a toll pass, or be billed from their invoice service called ZipCash. Drivers who overpay their ZipCash bill have their money deposited into this once secret account.

As previously mentioned, that account currently has around $57,000. The list of people that the NTTA owes money to is over 900 pages long. In addition, the money held in this account is gaining interest that is earning the NTTA money. The NTTA has stated that their reason for not paying back drivers is that it would cost them more to track down drivers than the amount of money they owe them. For many people, it is the principle of the NTTA holding their money and attempting to keep it a secret that is the real issue.

There have been several suggestions for ways the NTTA could pay back drivers to whom they owe money. Right now, the most logical and popular idea is to put the payments towards certain toll fees. That way, if a driver overpays once, that extra money could end up covering all of, or at least part of, their next toll. No matter how the money is given back to the driver, it is something that needs to be done. Please tell the NTTA to give back the money they owe, and to stop trying to secretly collect interest on their drivers.

Recently it has been revealed that you have a secret account holding over $57,000 of overpaid toll money. This was not made known to the public, and no effort has been made on your part to return the money to drivers. Just because it may cost more money to track down each driver doesn’t mean that this is right. There are other alternatives for putting this money to good use rather than just gathering interest in an account.

Many have suggested you use this money to make payments towards driver’s future bills. The next time you have to send a toll invoice to a driver, check to see if you have their money in your account. Then subtract that from their invoice and send them a bill for what they still owe you, if anything.

While you may argue that this is not a lot of money, and that it may cost you more money to track down everyone you owe, it is the principle of the thing. The fact that you kept the account secret shows that you know you are doing something wrong. Please figure out a way to give this money back, and disclose everything about this secret account.
