Applaud United Nations for Protecting Gender Identity

Target: United Nations

Goal: Show support for electing to include gender identity as a basis for protection in new resolution

Recently, the United Nations drafted its resolution on Extrajudicial, Summary, or Arbitrary Executions. This resolution defines who the United Nations considers in need of protection from being executed without a judicial process. The resolution has included individuals on basis of race, religion and sexuality. Now, the resolution also includes protecting individuals on basis of gender identity.

This is the first time that the term “gender identity” has been seen in a United Nations resolution. Introducing the term as a protected group is a major step towards worldwide acceptance of transgendered people. This resolution, including this term, was adopted by the United Nations in a vote of 108 to 1. As the United Nations overwhelmingly shows support for transgendered people around the world, other countries may join in showing the same support.

Gender identity is a controversial topic around the world. Transgendered people are murdered in many countries every day for their gender identity. By protecting individuals on the basis of gender identity, the United Nations is showing an understanding and support of gender identity on an international level. This support is needed for worldwide acceptance of transgendered individuals. According to Susan Rice, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, “Today’s vote on gender identity is evidence that we are, in fact, expanding international support and moving forward.”

Commend the United Nations for its commitment to protecting gender identity around the world.

Dear United Nations,

Recently, you voted overwhelmingly to adopt a resolution which included the protection of individuals based on gender identity. This is the first time the term “gender identity” has been included on a resolution, and your adoption of it shows incredible support for an often overlooked group of people. This resolution is a major step forward for the rights and acceptance of transgendered individuals around the world.

I applaud you for adopting this resolution. The rights of transgendered individuals are often not supported, and this resolution will have an international effect in changing this. Your acceptance of people no matter their gender identity will lead to worldwide knowledge of this issue, and hopefully worldwide acceptance as well.
