Put Novel About Racism & Police Brutality Back on School Shelves

Target: Lance Hindt, Superintendent of Katy Independent School District

Goal: Put important YA novel inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement back on bookshelves of school library.

An important young adult novel about racism, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement has been banned from the library shelves of one Texas school district. Katy Independent School District has banned Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give for its explicit language and mature material.

The book was banned without the customary review process. This allows the superintendent to ban the novel district-wide and prevent students from reading a novel that is reflecting the current struggles of our real world.

This ban is censorship to the highest degree. Banning a novel about Black Lives Matter is banning an important source of information from those students who should most have access to it. Sign the petition to demand that the book be added back to library bookshelves.

Dear Mr. Hindt,

You have banned bestselling novel The Hate U Give from bookshelves in your school district. Inspired by police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, this novel is a moving and important learning resource for readers of all ages.

Censorship will never help children learn. It will only ever keep them in the dark and prevent them from taking steps to help right our society’s wrongs. I demand that you unban The Hate U Give and give your students the opportunity to read this best-selling, thought-provoking novel.

  1. Gillian Miller says:

Why would anyone want a book about a terrorist organisation in any school? It is also a rabidly racist organisation. Anyone who wants to know about racism can find many well written books on the subject.

And, there should also been books on attacks by blacks on whites, Chinese on Japanese as well as Muslims on non-Muslims. Racism is not just on blacks, some blacks are racist themselves.

  2. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

stop racism and colorism now! no more censorship of free speech. we all need freedom of speech not hate speech like profanity.
