Thank Ohio for Sidelining Anti-Abortion Bill

Target: Ohio Senate

Goal: Thank Ohio Senate for halting restrictive anti-abortion bill that would have made even first trimester abortions illegal

The Ohio Senate recently halted a bill that would have made Ohio the most restrictive anti-abortion state in the nation. The bill, named the “Heartbeat Bill,” would have outlawed abortion after the first fetal heartbeat is detected. The fetal heartbeat can be detected as early as six weeks into the pregnancy.

While the bill did pass in the House of Representative, the Ohio Senate decided not to vote on it during the upcoming legislative session. Supporters of the bill hoped it would present a legal challenge that would give the courts an opportunity to revisit and overturn the Roe vs. Wade ruling. This ruling originally made first trimester abortion legal.

The group backing the bill is Ohio Right to Life, the largest anti-abortion group in the state. They have continued to support the bill despite the Senate’s decision not to vote on the issue. Many lawmakers in Ohio voiced their concern that passing the Heartbeat Bill would open the floodgates for similar restrictive lawsuits. Additionally, many believed the Heartbeat Bill its self was unconstitutional. Setting such strict limits would effectively eliminate abortions in the state.

Sign the petition below, and thank the Ohio Senate for tabling the Heartbeat Bill. This bill infringes on the rights of women, and would severely limit the options available to women.

Dear Ohio Senate,

Thank you for sideling the Heartbeat Bill. This bill would unfairly infringe on the reproductive rights of women and would directly contend with the Roe vs. Wade ruling. If this bill had passed, women would be forced to continue with unwanted pregnancies, seek abortions out of state, or attempt unsafe methods of abortion.

By not voting on the Heartbeat Bill, you are protecting the rights of women in Ohio and setting an example for the rest of the nation. Additionally, you are upholding constitutional ruling.
