Support the Removal of Racist Confederate Monuments

Target: Jim Strickland, Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee

Goal: Applaud the removal of two Confederate statues from Memphis’s downtown parkland.

The city of Memphis has chosen to do what is right, combatting institutionalized racism by taking down two Confederate statues despite the state of Tennessee’s determination to maintain monuments of prejudice and hate. The statues of Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis and Nathan Bedford Forrest were removed overnight and moved, to be preserved in an undisclosed location. The move is in defiance of the state’s decision to deny the city council’s bid to get rid of the relics.

Memphis city council responded with a unanimous vote to sell the plots of land where the monuments stood, thus enabling their removal. The men depicted in the statues were a president of the Confederacy, and a Ku Klux Klan leader and slave trader respectively. As Mayor Strickland stated, “History is being made in Memphis now. These statues no longer represent who we are as a modern diverse city with momentum.” Sign below to support this stand for human rights and dignity, and to encourage the rest of the country to follow suit.

Dear Mayor Strickland,

Thank you for your commitment to forwarding  America’s movement toward true equality, respect, and human rights for all. The removal of racist monuments from Memphis, especially in the face of opposition from the state of Tennessee, sets an example that the rest of the country must follow of combatting prejudice.

The statues of Jefferson Davis and Nathan Bedford Forrest were symbols not only of the Confederate movement, but of America’s refusal to acknowledge the plight of its minorities and the huge problem that still exists of racism and discrimination, especially against the black community. I support Memphis’s removal of these relics, and urge you to continue combatting racism in this country however possible.

its european supremacy and its wrong. there is no need for eurocentric statues. if you need statues of indigenous people, fine. stop erasing indigenous people from history cause its racist and its wrongful. classic buildings are being repaced with present-day buildings already so enough with those male criminal statues already. even history and art don’t need to be hidden, there are still lies out there like whitewashed history.
