Save Puerto Rico’s Pet Population

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Increase rescue efforts for pets left homeless by Hurricane Maria.

Hundreds of pets have been left homeless by Hurricane Maria, filling up shelters faster than the shelters can find new homes for them. Such a task is impossible given that Puerto Rico is still struggling to recover from the damage left by the storm, and it is the animals who suffer. Cats and dogs are tossed over fences or tied to gates, and shelters are forced to take in far more than they can handle. Adoption numbers are at an all-time low, as many feel they are ill-equipped to care for animals.

This is a tragic situation and will only get worse with time. People are still struggling to rebuild their own lives after losing their homes and jobs to the storm, and it is the animals who bear half of that suffering as their needs are pushed to the wayside. Many of these pets are not likely to survive living in overcrowded shelters, and once these shelters run out of room, many pets will still be forced to live on the streets.

We must step in and increase the rescue efforts for these animals, before the problem grows worse than it is. The United States must aid in the construction of larger shelters or the expansion of existing ones, send rescue teams to care for the animals, and urge adoptions among citizens who are capable of supporting a pet. Sign this petition to help these poor animals before they succumb to this dangerous situation.

Dear Mr. President,

Puerto Rico’s pet population is suffering in overcrowded shelters, many of which are exceeding their capacity in order to provide shelter for these animals. Owners who can barely afford to support themselves after losing their homes and jobs to Hurricane Maria are forced to abandon their pets on the streets. The day is fast approaching when even the largest shelter will not be able to accommodate all of these animals.

We cannot let this come to pass. These innocent animals are victims of the hurricane just as much as their owners have been, and worse, they cannot take care of themselves. Their chance for survival is slim to none; shelters will be forced to put many of them down, or they will simply starve on the streets. Adoption numbers are at an all-time low, and even rescue workers can only do so much to aid these animals.

The United States must step in to aid in the rescue efforts for these pets in any way we can before hundreds of them are either euthanized or die slow and painful deaths from starvation. Animals are just as important as people, and they deserve to be safe and happy.
