Crack Down Harder on Fraternity Hazing

Target: Betsy DeVos, United States Secretary of Education

Goal: Enforce anti-hazing laws more strongly for college fraternities.

A Texas college fraternity pledge suffered a lacerated spleen during a three-day hazing period. Said hazing consisted of sleep and water deprivation, being forced to roll in his own waste and vomit, and being tackled repeatedly while running along a country road. The fraternity has been indicted for the incident.

Hazing is illegal, and college campuses generally frown upon the practice. However, this has not stopped other dangerous and lethal hazing incidents from taking place. Fraternities will claim to simply be making the pledges earn their stripes or prove themselves worthy, but in reality these initiations are just excuses for violence, bullying, and humiliation of students hoping to earn a place in the group. It is exploitation at its worst, and despite being illegal it continues to happen. The fraternity being punished is a positive thing, but in the grand scheme of things, it is better if hazing is not allowed to take place to begin with.

We must demand stronger laws against hazing and for colleges to crack down more harshly on the practice. Too many innocent students have been subjected to brutal torture by those all too happy to exploit their desire to fit in. Sign this petition to ensure that hazing becomes a thing of the past as quickly as possible.

Dear Secretary DeVos,

A Texas college fraternity pledge suffered horribly during a three-day hazing period, in which he was forced to roll in his own waste and tackled repeatedly afterwards. The student’s spleen was lacerated, and the fraternity was indicted. However, there should not have been a hazing period to begin with. The long-standing tradition of horribly torturing students into proving themselves ‘worthy’ of joining these groups is exploitation of the hopeful by the powerful, taking advantage of a student’s desire to fit in and using it as a means of causing them harm.

Hazing is illegal, but the laws against it need to be stronger so it cannot happen in the first place. You must crack down harder on hazing, and insist that colleges do the same. We must end the practice of exploiting hopeful pledges within our lifetime.
