President Trump: Do Not Censor the Centers for Disease Control

Target: President Donald Trump

Goal: Do not forbid our nation’s major public health agency from using certain words or phrases, including “science-based,” “fetus,” and “transgender.”

In a move prioritizing partisan politics above public health and human rights, the Trump administration is censoring officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as they prepare documents for next year’s budget. President Trump has listed seven words and phrases that the CDC is now forbidden from using in these official documents, greatly diminishing visibility for certain oppressed groups and health issues.

The list of banned words and phrases consists of: “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.” In some cases, alternate phrasing ideas were offered, but in others there were no replacements were given. Preventing the CDC from using any of this language discourages it from discussing things like the needs of minority and transgender communities, abortion rights, and even things like the Zika virus and its effects on pregnant women and fetuses. It is therefore much more difficult to address these issues, and even prevents scientists from researching these areas of concern and sharing their findings with the public without fear of retribution. Sign below to demand that this dangerous censorship be stopped.

Dear President Trump,

The purpose of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is to serve public health and protect American citizens. By forbidding the CDC from using certain words and phrases in official documents as next year’s budget is prepared, you are preventing the agency from serving its purpose and putting the well-being of Americans at risk.

It is dangerous to imply that phrases like “science-based,” “evidence-based,” or “diversity” are negative or even controversial. It fosters an environment of fear surrounding different communities and around science itself. By censoring language that allows us to talk about certain avenues of research or the needs of certain communities, scientists are discouraged from pursuing those avenues or addressing the needs of those communities. This is an unacceptable prioritization of politics over public safety and human lives. I urge you not to forbid the CDC from using language like “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.”

  1. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

transgender itself is not a disease. if trump bans words, then cdc should be banned. enough of trump already. banning good words are just hate speech.

  2. Let me play devil’s advocate. I questioned this also, never one for any type of censure. There those that use words in scientific settings without thought of their political, or cultural bias. Diversity? Yeah this all altruistsic, but what kind of diversity are we looking at? Are diverse opinions allowed, are we so diverse that we are unwilling to allow those with cultural or political ideas to have the space to voice ideas safely. Fetus, the dehumanizing word for a child yet born, is similar to words used in warfare to dehumanized the enemy, kraut, nip, gook, raghead, dune coon. It’s easier to declare war on humans when you make them something less than human. This wrong in any sense. Americans abort more children than any other nation, mostly for the sake of convenience. CDC is unwilling to approach this national holocaust against unborn humans. Science based, I’m okay with keeping this one but whose science are we using? In years past many bad ideas begin with bad science, so don’t use the “s” word to bully others with your bad research. Look at the people that believe autism is caused by inoculations. There just a thought for the other side. By the way Trump is a big winded bully who is rude and impulsive, but it isn’t any worse than Ms Clinton and her separated twin from birth, Mr. Obama, who may for the most part be very polite but even worse bullies than Trump.
