Success: Congressman to Resign Amidst Allegations of Verbal Abuse and Sexual Harassment

Target: Congressman Blake Farenthold

Goal: Support the decision not to seek re-election, and demand resignation take place as soon as possible for allegedly abusive behavior in the work environment.

A Texas congressman whose workplace behavior has been described as sexually demeaning and verbally abusive will give up his seat following multiple allegations. Representative Blake Farenthold’s reported vulgar and offensive speech has long been contested, including in petitions like this one at ForceChange. Farenthold is currently under investigation by the Ethics Committee for sexual harassment allegations brought by his former aide Lauren Greene. Another former senior aide, Michael Rekola, has now come forward as well, describing pervasive abuse and a hostile work environment.

As this ForceChange petition shows, the current allegations facing Rep. Farenthold are not the first time that his alleged sexually explicit and disturbing statements have illustrated that he is unfit to hold office. Michael Rekola recounted verbal abuse that caused him to seek medical treatment and counseling, including lewd remarks about Rekola’s wife (then-fiancé), and regularly calling aides “f**ktards.” Rep. Farenthold denies that he engaged in verbal abuse, but does admit to calling staffers “f**ktards,” though he says it was “in jest.” Sign below to support the congressman’s resignation and to demand that it occur as soon as possible, not just at the end of his term in early 2019.

Dear Representative Farenthold,

The many allegations of your unacceptable behavior and the unsafe, verbally abusive work environment you have reportedly created—including sexist and sexually demeaning comments—indicate that you are unfit to fill the office you hold. The Ethics Committee’s investigation into Lauren Greene’s allegations of sexual harassment combined with former communications director Michael Rekola’s account of your treatment clearly show that you are making the correct choice not to seek re-election.

These allegations are extremely serious, and this kind of abuse, including but certainly not limited to consistently calling aides “f**ktard” or “idiot,” is not only unprofessional and inappropriate, but is extremely offensive and has no place on Capitol Hill. I urge you not just to give up your congressional seat, but to resign immediately.
