Target: German parliament’s agriculture committee
Goal: To ban bestiality in Germany
In the US, bestiality is banned at a state, not a federal level. In some states, laws against bestiality fall under general sodomy laws, but in the last 20 years, many states have changed their laws to specifically outlaw bestiality. The practice of engaging in sexual acts with animals is not, however, a practice that is banned internationally or even a practice that is frowned upon in some countries. Germany, for example, legalized bestiality (otherwise known as zoophilia) in 1969. Following the legalization of these acts in Germany, many animal welfare groups rightfully stood opposed to bestiality and have campaigned for Germany to amend the law and ban sexual acts with animals. German Parliament will soon vote on whether to make it an offense to engage in bestiality. Sign this petition and demand that Germany vote to ban bestiality.
If Germany bans bestiality, offenders will be forced to pay a fine of 25,000 euros. Surprisingly, many oppose the ban believing that not only is there nothing wrong with engaging in sexual acts with animals, but going so far as to believe that the animals are willing partners. Michael Kiok, the chairman of the pressure group Zoophile Engagement for Tolerance and Information (Zeta) stated in an interview with the BBC, “We see animals as partners and not as a means of gratification. We don’t force them to do anything. Animals are much easier to understand than women.”
As offensive and disgusting as that statement is, Kiok is not the only person to believe that human beings should be allowed to force defenseless and voiceless creatures to have sex with them. Bestiality is permissible in Belgium, Denmark, and Sweden- although pornography featuring bestiality is outlawed. Additionally, the UK amended their laws in 2003, changing the maximum sentence from life imprisonment to only two years if convicted.
Bestiality is a gross abuse of animals and cruel way of asserting power over victims that cannot defend themselves or speak out against the atrocity. It is rape. If we discuss the horror behind this abuse and support Germany in banning bestiality, perhaps other nations will follow suit. Sign this petition and demand that Germany vote to oppose bestiality.
Dear German Parliament,
The current law on bestiality states that engaging in sexual acts with animals is legal unless proven that doing so causes the animal “significant harm.” It seems surprising that while rape among humans is illegal in your nation, that you would legally allow for defenseless animals to be raped. For how could engaging in sexual acts with animals–who cannot speak or defend themselves–be anything other than rape? Is it not forcing another being to have sex against their will?
Humans teach animals how to behave; we tame them and domesticate them. Domesticated animals depend on humans to care for them, feed them, and raise them up from when they are young. To think that it would be legal for a human to so abuse his or her position of power as caretaker and owner is beyond shocking–it is monstrous.
By discussing the outrageous current legal stance on bestiality in Germany and by calling out other nations who have similar legal views on bestiality, then maybe we can encourage more nations to outlaw the rape of animals. Stop supporting the legal rape of animals. We are calling on you to vote to ban bestiality in Germany.
