Defend the First Amendment Rights of Bloggers

Target: United States Congress

Goal: Protect the right to free speech for online bloggers

An act will soon be introduced to Congress that will protect the rights of internet bloggers. Bloggers are writers who write online on a variety of subjects, and can be the focus of controversy. However, bloggers are often faced with legal action from large companies which may seek to limit their right to free speech. As many bloggers are individuals writing on private websites, they do not have the ability to fight for their rights when faced with large corporate lawsuits. This act seeks to protect bloggers from being forced to give up their rights to large companies.

Recently, blogger Matthew Inman was faced with a demand for $20,000 from Funnyjunk, a humor website, because his blog had parodied the larger site. His blog is protected by the right to free speech, but he was faced with the lawsuit despite his rights. Inman was able to fight this lawsuit with the help of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, but many other bloggers would be forced to give in to ridiculous monetary demands from large websites or take down their blogs altogether. Large companies and websites target independent bloggers because they cannot fight a lawsuit, and the large company will gain money from challenging the bloggers’ right to free speech.

Twenty-eight states already have laws protecting bloggers from these bullying lawsuits. The act introduced to Congress seeks to protect the rights of bloggers across the country. Many internet companies, including AOL and Yelp, support the act as they realize lawsuits hurt many internet users. Bloggers have as much of a right to free speech as any other person in the country, and this right should not be taken away by large companies and websites. Tell Congress to support this act and give bloggers their right to free speech.

Dear United States Congress,

An act is being introduced to you that will protect the rights of online bloggers across the country. Bloggers are usually independent writers exercising their right to free speech by writing on the internet. Larger companies and websites try to sue these bloggers and silence them or demand large amounts of money. This act will protect bloggers from these bullying lawsuits and protect their right to free speech.

I ask you to support this act. Blogging is a medium similar to print journalism, which is a protected form of free speech. Bloggers are people who use the internet to say whatever they want to say, and this form of expression should be legally protected as others are. Support this act and support the right to free speech.
