Save Rule Protecting Consumers from Deceptive Hidden Airline Fees

Target: Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Secretary of Transportation

Goal: Preserve the proposed rule that requires airlines to reveal baggage and other fees when a customer books a flight.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that it will suspend the rule ensuring that airlines disclose baggage and other fees when consumers purchase a ticket. Even though this rule is clearly in the best interest of consumers and protects them from having to pay hidden and deceptive costs for their flights, the DOT said in a statement that it decided to do away with the rule because it was “of limited public benefit.”

Officially called the Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Transparency of Airline Ancillary Service Fees, this measure was proposed by the Obama administration but was then frozen by the Trump administration before it could take effect. Another rule that would require airlines to provide their customers with more information about how much money they make from things like seat upgrades has also been suspended. Although technically the DOT has not done away with any “rulemakings” that were already being enforced, this move clearly prioritizes corporate profit at the expense of citizens. Sign below to demand that these measures requiring transparency about airline fees be maintained.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Chao,

The DOT’s decision to prioritize profit over transparency and the needs of airline customers is unacceptable. It is dishonest and deceptive to allow things like hidden baggage fees, and it is simply untrue to call the rule preventing this “of limited public benefit.”

American citizens deserve to know what they will be forced to pay when they book an airline ticket, and they deserve to know exactly where that money goes and how much of it is direct profit for the airlines. Consumers need to be able to trust a company when they book a flight, and they cannot do so if airlines are allowed to deceive them by not disclosing fees at the time of booking. I urge you to maintain and enforce the Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Transparency of Airline Ancillary Service Fees and the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Ancillary Airline Passenger Revenues.

Sincerely,
