Don’t Teach Altered History Lessons in Schools

Target: Kevin Yeung, Secretary of Education, Hong Kong

Goal: Don’t let the government censor or control history lessons in Hong Kong’s classrooms.

Children in Hong Kong may soon be forced to learn a communist, censored version of their history, regulated by the Chinese government. These history lessons will intentionally disregard troubling moments of violence and corruption in Chinese history.

Only by learning history can we avoid repeating its mistakes. However, students in Hong Kong will not learn of civil disobedience or citizen-led protests like the one held in Tiananmen Square, setting the stage for similar violence to result again.

Students in Hong Kong have every right to learn of both the good and bad the Chinese government has done. Sign the petition and demand that students in Hong Kong learn a true history, free from government influence or censorship.

Dear Secretary Yeung,

The government of China is infringing on the education of students by enforcing a revised, communist version of history in classrooms. This version of history ignores civilian protests, government corruption, and military violence.

How can a generation of educated, strong, and independent citizens be raised if they’re sheltered from the truth and denied the ability to think critically for themselves? I demand that the history curriculum in Hong Kong not be changed to match China’s revisionist wishes.
