Demand Ivory Ban in the European Union

Target: Hans Bruyninckx, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency

Goal: Demand that the E.U. ban ivory imports and trade to protect elephants.

This year, both China and the United Kingdom have announced bans on the sale of ivory. Although the E.U. has banned the export of raw ivory, ivory can still be sold within the E.U., and carved or processed ivory items can still be exported. Conservationists are concerned that these loopholes are used by illegal ivory traders to disguise newly obtained ivory as antiques and thus launder ivory through the E.U.

In the last decade alone, African elephant populations have declined by more than 50 percent. Although habitat loss is a major problem, poaching is likely the largest threat facing African elephants. In just three years, 100,000 African elephants were killed for their ivory, despite an international trade ban on ivory enacted in 1990. Conservations say that the amount of poaching is unsustainable for the elephant population. African elephants carry their young for 22 months before giving birth and usually only have one calf at a time. This slow reproductive rate means that the number of births cannot keep pace with the number of elephants being killed for ivory.

Sign this petition to urge the E.U. to place a total ban on ivory to prevent elephants from becoming extinct.

Dear Mr. Bruyninckx,

I am writing to urge you to ban the sale of ivory within the E.U. Bans on legal trade of ivory can have enormous impact, even affecting black market prices. For example, China’s announcement that it would ban sales of ivory by the end of 2017 has caused a dramatic decrease in the price of illegal ivory throughout Asia. Although it may be impossible to abolish the black market ivory trade entirely, if prices drop there is much less incentive for poachers to kill elephants for their tusks.

Once numbering in the millions, there are only around 400,000 elephants left in all of Africa. We must do everything we can to protect this valuable species. I ask that you and your colleagues at the European Environment Agency do all that you can to end the sale of ivory within the E.U. and protect African elephants.
