Target: The National Association for Research and Therapy on Homosexuality
Goal: Don’t file a lawsuit against new legislation that bans gay conversion therapy for minors in California.
The senate recently passed legislation that would ban gay conversion therapy for minors in California. Governor Jerry Brown signed the law, putting it into effect as of January 1st. This new law is aimed at protecting minors from being forced to attend conversion therapy by their parents or guardians.
Conversion therapy is a process that is supposed to turn gay men and women straight. The therapy has no basis in science and medicine and is often extremely stressful and humiliating. Such therapies have contributed to depression and suicide in the past.
The National Association for Research and Therapy on Homosexuality claims their methods are effective, and plan to file a lawsuit to prevent the law from going into effect. They consider homosexuality a “mental disorder” that can be treated despite the fact that it was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders decades ago.
Opponents of Gov. Brown’s new law say it violates the First Amendment. Proponents of the law say that such therapies can do massive damage to children and that it should be unlawful to subject them to self-hatred and emotional abuse.
Sign the petition below, and tell The National Association for Research and Therapy on Homosexuality that their antiquated and misguided therapies are no longer welcome in California. While adults over the age of 18 will still be able to seek such therapy if desired, there is no reason to subject children to those methods.
Dear National Association for Research and Therapy on Homosexuality,
Homosexuality is not a mental disorder, nor is it a lifestyle choice that can be changed with directive therapy. Your methods are antiquated, and promote self-hatred and depression among the children you claim to help.
I urge you not to file a lawsuit to prevent the ban on gay conversion therapy. While you will still be permitted to work with consenting adults, minors should not be coerced into receiving destructive therapy.
