Stop Ski Resort from Destroying National Park

Target: Miroslav Kalugerov, Director of the Nature Protection Service, Bulgaria

Goal: Do not allow a ski resort to expand into a national park area home to endangered wolves and bears.

The Bulgarian government has shown its support for a famed ski resort’s plans to expand its slopes by over 200 square miles into Pirin National Park, an area known as a UNESCO heritage site of “outstanding universal value.” The park is a refuge for a number of large mammal species, including endangered brown bears and gray wolves. If this expansion is approved, these animals will likely have nowhere else to go.

The Bansko Ski Resort is one of Europe’s best-known winter destinations, bringing in massive amounts of tourism. Research has shown that this already puts a strain on native wildlife, such as chamois goat-antelopes and wood grouse. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is leading the campaign against the resort’s planned expansion, claiming that it will bring in even more tourism that will put further pressure on these and other species. If the resort expands into the national park, the WWF alleges that the bears and wolves residing there will be left with nowhere to flee and may not survive if their prey species disappear.

Bulgarian officials must be made to see how devastating this ski resort’s proposal truly is. Sign this petition and contest the further expansion of this already sprawling and environmentally damaging resort.

Dear Mr. Kalugerov,

The Bansko Ski Resort has announced plans to expand its area by over 330 kilometers (206 square miles), including 175 kilometers’ worth of new ski lifts. Part of the expansion area would include Pirin National Park, an area deemed by the United Nations to be a UNESCO heritage site of “outstanding universal value.” If this proposal is approved, the national park and all wildlife living within it will be put at grave risk.

This park is home to a number of threatened and endangered species, including European brown bears and gray wolves. These large predators rely on having prey such as chamois and grouse available, but research has shown that tourism drives these species away. If the resort is expanded, the bears and wolves will likely starve.

We urge you to stop supporting this disastrous plan and give wildlife a chance to survive in this unique and sensitive environment.

  1. Let’s leave some space for wildlife to live! It’s their homes! Don’t be greedy and take all the land for personal gain!

  3. Our precious wildlife are dying because of lost of habitat and greed.
This land is theirs. No business expansion should be allowed, endangering animals and causing them to starve to death! The ski resort is already causing immense stress on the animals trying to exist. No more cruelty toward the wildlife that was there first! No more sickening greed!
