Protect Remaining Finless Porpoise Population

Target: Xi Jinping, President of China

Goal: Save the finless porpoise from extinction.

Asia’s finless porpoise population is the closest it’s ever been to extinction. Habitat loss and fishing nets have largely contributed to the species’ steady decline over the past century, and now they face another threat in the construction of hydropower dams. These dams not only destroy the porpoise’s habitat, but also disrupt the flow of the water leading them to their reproduction grounds.

We cannot let this species disappear. Wildlife endangerment numbers are much too high these days, and drift nets have been unnecessary for years thanks to more humane methods of fishing. The finless porpoise is a lovely, intelligent creature whose dietary habits help control the crustacean and cephalopod populations, and whose absence from the oceans would disturb the ecosystem. They are far too important to let them die.

We must protect what remains of the finless porpoise by finalizing a ban on gill nets, shutting down hydropower dams, and protecting their habitat. Sign this petition to ensure that this species survives and is able to repopulate.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Jinping,

The finless porpoises that reside within your oceans are dangerously close to extinction. Their numbers have steadily declined over the past hundred years due to habitat loss, becoming tangled in fishing nets, and now, the construction of hydropower dams that disrupt the flow of the water.

You must not allow these beautiful, gentle, intelligent creatures to disappear. The finless porpoise is beneficial to the ecosystem and deserves better than to continually lose its numbers to such dangerous factors. They must be given a chance to repopulate and thrive once more, and that means you must enforce stronger protections for them, including banning gill nets and shutting down the hydropower dams that damage their habitat and disrupt the water flow. Please help us prevent this species from going extinct.

Sincerely,

Illegal fishing should be severely punished, and Gill Nets should be banned, permanently. Too many innocent helpless living beings are dying. Humans can and must do more–stop the cruelty, selfishness and greed!
