Support Rewilding and Biodiversity Preservation in Europe

Target: Frans Schepers, Managing Director of Rewilding Europe

Goal: Praise Rewilding Europe for their work restoring and protecting valuable ecosystems in Europe.

The Dutch foundation Rewilding Europe has committed to rewilding one million hectares of land by 2022. Rewilding Europe has made significant progress, especially in the Rhodope mountain range in southeastern Europe, where they have played an active role in protecting existing species and helping re-introduce species that were driven out by past human activity.

The Rhodope mountain range in southeastern Europe is one of the most biodiverse areas on the entire continent. This mountain range is home to over 4,300 animal species and over 2,000 species of flowering plants. The Rhodopes are an especially important habitat for bird life in Europe. They serve as an essential breeding ground for several types of vultures, including species that are globally threatened. The foundation has taken an active role in the LIFE Vultures Project, which collects data on vultures in order to contribute to conservation efforts.

Rewilding Europe was also instrumental in the reintroduction of European bison to the Rhodopes in 2013. Hunting and habitat loss drove wild bison to extinction in Europe in the early 20th century. But now the reintroduced bison are flourishing in the Rhodopes: two healthy calves have already been born. Just this fall, the foundation introduced two more young bison to the Rhodope population in order to increase the genetic diversity of the herd.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Schepers,

I am writing to thank you for your commitment to protecting and increasing the biodiversity of Europe. Rewilding Europe’s work in the Rhodope mountain range is truly inspiring. The reintroductions of European bison, red deer, and fallow deer have no doubt led to major benefits for the ecosystem. I am also incredibly grateful for the foundation’s work to end the horrific practice of poisoning predator species in this area. Your public education programs, especially those dispelling negative public perception of scavenger species like vultures, will help ensure that future generations will also want to protect the biodiversity of Europe.

With so much environmental destruction being wrought all over the world, your foundation provides hope that we will be able to restore nature to its former glory.

Sincerely,
