Applaud Congressman for Joining Walmart Walkouts

Target: U.S. Representative Alan Grayson (D-Fla.)

Goal: Thank Representative Grayson for supporting Walmart workers as they walked off their jobs in protest against the company

On Thanksgiving night, U.S. Representative-elect Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) joined a Walmart worker as she walked off her job in St. Cloud, Florida. Representative Grayson later joined a walkout in an Orlando Walmart on Black Friday.  The walkouts were part of a nationwide protest against the world’s largest retailer.

Walmart workers at over 1,000 locations in 100 cities went on strike as of 8:00 pm on Thanksgiving night to kick off a Black Friday protest against the company’s retaliation against striking workers. Walmart workers who voice complaints over low wages, sexual/gender discrimination, and mistreatment by management face retaliation which often results in being fired. In spite of this, the retail chain had never seen workers walk out at multiple stores in its 50-year history until Thanksgiving evening.

Representative Grayson’s decision to join Walmart employees in their walkout lends important support to their movement for reform in Walmart policies. It demonstrates that the striking workers are gaining more and more recognition as a force for change. Support from a mainstream politician also has the potential to bring even more attention and credibility to the striking workers. As a Congressman who identifies as a progressive Democrat, this was a fitting act.

The movement to bring dignity and fair wages to the Walmart workforce has begun and few politicians have openly voiced their support of the walkouts. The walkouts are likely just the beginning, and it would behoove progressive politicians to join the cause against Walmart’s policies. Thank Representative Alan Grayson for joining the striking Walmart workers in their historic stand for basic worker rights.

Dear Representative Grayson,

I am writing this letter to applaud you for joining in the recent Walmart employee walkouts.

Walmart has disrespected and underpaid its workers for too long. This is something many Americans recognize. These strikes have been a long time coming and now that they’ve begun, it’s only a matter of time before Walmart will have to recognize that it cannot continue policies that insult the dignity of working people and prevent them from bringing home a living wage.

Your decision to participate in walkouts with Walmart employees demonstrates the kind of solidarity with working people Americans want to see in their politicians today. These walkouts are historic and your willingness to be present is an important gesture that means a lot to those who risk their jobs by demonstrating. Thank you for standing alongside striking Walmart workers.
