Stop Letting Company Dump Toxic Oil in Marine Ecosystem

Target: Gian Luca Galletti, Italian Minister of the Environment

Goal: Force oil company to clean up contamination that is poisoning the surrounding land, water, and people.

An oil refinery in the town of Gela, Italy is having catastrophic effects on the environment and on the health of local people. The oil company Eni has allegedly been dumping toxic waste into the sea around Gela and indeed, environmentalists reported that some areas of the sea actually contain more pollution than sea water.

Contamination of the environment around Gela is extensive: tests have shown highly polluted air, soil, and groundwater. Environmentalists found that the levels of arsenic, mercury, and benzene in ground water were much higher than accepted safety standards. These toxins are undoubtedly making their way into the bodies of the people of Gela – tests showed high levels of arsenic in their urine. Studies of workers at the oil refinery found that they had much higher than average rates of lung cancer, respiratory disease, and genitourinary disease. High levels of urinary arsenic have also been linked to increased risk of miscarriage and infant mortality. When infants do survive, they have abnormally high rates of birth defects, especially heart and genital defects. Although little work has examined the environmental impact of the contamination at Gela, it has been conclusively established that toxins like arsenic are just as dangerous to animals as they are to humans.

Sign this petition to urge the Italian Ministry of the Environment to enforce environmental regulations in Gela.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Galletti,

Gela has been on the Ministry of the Environment’s list of highly contaminated areas since 1998. Yet in the nearly 20 years since, there have been no concrete actions to reduce said contamination. Although the Italian government recommended a series of remediation works to decrease pollution in the environment, these works were never completed. Environmental contamination is causing high rates of lung cancer and birth defects among the people of Gela.

The damage to the environment and the health of the people of Gela has gone on for much too long. You must take action now. We ask that you and your colleagues at the Ministry of the Environment force Eni to decontaminate Gela.

Sincerely,
