Demand President Obama Release Uncharged Guantanamo Bay Detainee

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: To either release Guantanamo Bay detainee Hussain Salem Mohammed Almerfedi or to charge him formally with a crime

Hussain Salem Mohammed Almerfedi has been held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba since 2003 without charge or trial. In 2010, a federal judge ruled that his detention was illegal under U.S. law. However, the Court of Appeals overturned this ruling and the Supreme Court has yet to hear his case. Hussain Almerfedi should be released immediately unless he is to be charged with a recognizable criminal offense. It is also imperative that his trial follows international law.

Hussain Almerfedi was arrested in Iran in December 2001 and was summarily handed over to U.S. authorities in Afghanistan. Almerfedi claims that he left Yemen to find a better life in Europe and denies charges that he helped terrorists move into Afghanistan from Iran. While the mere dismissal of the charges is not enough to disprove them, it should be enough to force a fair trial.

Sign this petition and tell the president that you oppose indefinite detention without trial by the United States government. These human rights violations are an embarrassment to the country and are just further proof that the prison at Guantanamo should be shut down. If detainees are not to be charged or fairly charged in a federal court, the prisoners should be released. There should be no exception in the case of Hussain Salem Mohammed Almerfedi. If he is not to be charged with a crime, he should be released immediately and unconditionally.

Dear President Obama,

Hussain Almerfedi has been held in Guantanamo Bay for the last 9 years without charge. All in spite of the Guantanamo Review Task Force ruling that Almerfedi should be transferred to a legally legitimate holding facility. Almerfedi and his compatriots who have not been charged should either be released immediately or have their cases reviewed.

Indefinite detention without trial should not be an acceptable practice in the United States. The human rights violations that are occurring at Guantanamo Bay are an embarrassment to our country. The violations are also further proof that the prison should be shut down permanently. If detainees such as Hussain Salem Mohammed Almerfedi are not to be charged, they should be released immediately. Please release Hussain Almerfedi at once if he is not to face an internationally recognized criminal charge.
