Target: District Attorney Steve Cooley
Goal: To investigate the neglectful actions of a senior living facility’s management that may have resulted in a double murder-suicide
Building manager Charlie Vanhager repeatedly reported violent threats that she had received from “Chuck,” a resident at the senior living facility Golden West Tower (GWT). She was ignored and recently he shot her and another woman dead before killing himself. The district attorney needs to fully investigate GWT’s inaction towards Ms. Vanhager’s numerous reports of harassment.
Golden West Tower is a senior living facility that underwent a multi-million dollar renovation in 2005. Over 30 years old, it received a major makeover both internally and externally. New carpets, new appliances, and new air conditioning plus heating units were just a few of the renovations that were completed in the 180 units. Upper management went to exhaustive measures to ensure that its residents were comfortable throughout the whole process, relocating each person floor by floor. And yet when one of its own staff complained extensively about harassment from Chuck, it was ignored.
Ms. Charlie Vanhager was well-liked by everybody and really enjoyed her job. She was a building manager at Golden West Tower for almost five years. Her resident Chuck had physically threatened her for the past two years and she had reported it on numerous occasions. He told her that he owned a gun and threatened to shoot her with it. She reported this threat as well as several others. Chuck made good on his threat by shooting both Ms. Vanhager and Ms. Maria Leon at GWT’s lobby and then turning the gun on himself. Police have not revealed the shooter’s full identity yet until his relatives have been notified of his death.
The double homicide and suicide at Golden West Tower was definitely preventable. Please sign the petition below urging the district attorney to investigate GWT to determine if it did not adequately protect its staff and residents from danger by ignoring so many warning signs.
Dear District Attorney Steve Cooley,
On November 20, 2012, an elderly man identified as “Chuck” shot and killed two women at Golden West Tower, the senior living facility that he resided in. The building’s management had already been warned of his erratic behavior for years, but had ignored it. Please investigate its disregard of the many complaints that it had received, making it partly responsible for the homicides that occurred.
Ms. Vanhager had alerted her superiors of Chuck’s dangerous behavior both verbally and in several letters but no action was taken. Other staff and residents had also reported his unstable and volatile behavior and had wanted him to be evicted. Unfortunately, the company’s inaction resulted in a double murder and suicide, leaving behind sorrow and heartbreak for family members and residents.
In what was probably a preventable tragedy, three people are now dead because a company decided to ignore multiple warning signs. Please look into Golden West Tower’s background and see if it should be prosecuted for ignoring Chuck’s past outbursts of violence and abusive behavior.
