Target: San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office
Goal: Thank the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office for setting up a regular patrol the Caltrain tracks and saving half a dozen lives
The Caltrain commuter train runs between San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Running at nearly 80 miles per hour, the train is a fast and reliable source of transportation for commuters and tourists alike. Unfortunately, the train has gained a reputation for a much sadder reason as well. This year alone, 11 people have died on the train tracks; five of those deaths were conclusively ruled as suicides. This figure puts California in the top 10 states for suicide by train.
In order to combat the alarmingly high number of suicides, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has set up regular patrols of the Caltrain station and surrounding tracks. So far the office has prevented half a dozen suicides in the past couple of months, and hopes continued patrols will keep saving lives.
While the sheriff’s office remains optimistic about lowering the suicide rate, patrol guards know they cannot be everywhere at once. With this thought in mind, Caltrain has spent 4.2 million dollars since 2006 to install better fencing along the tracks. They also placed signs with suicide hotline numbers along the train’s route. Hopefully, someone contemplating suicide will see the signs and seek help instead of ending their lives.
Sign the petition below, and thank the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office for keeping people safe on the train tracks. It is a difficult and often heartbreaking job, and the office should be commended for saving lives and getting people the help they need.
Dear San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office,
I would like to thank you for your efforts to prevent suicide on the Caltrain tracks. The high suicide rate on these tracks has put California in the top 10 states where people are most likely to commit suicide by train. This is a statistic that is deeply troubling to me, and I’m glad your office is taking steps to prevent more deaths.
In the past couple of months, your officers have saved half a dozen lives. That is half a dozen people who now have a second chance at life. Together with Caltrain’s efforts, you are lowering the suicide rate and giving California a happier reputation.
