Demand the Release of Human Rights Activist From Cuban Prison

Target: Cuban President Raul Castro Ruz

Goal: To attain the immediate release of wrongfully imprisoned human rights activist

Human rights activist Antonio Rodiles was arrested in Havana and charged with “resisting authority.” He has been placed in pre-trial detention but no date has been set for his trial. These charges are intended to keep Rodiles silent and unable to continue his human rights work.

Rodiles is a coordinator of a group calling on the government to ratify international human rights treaties. Citizen Demand for Another Cuba works towards getting Cuba to ratify the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

All of his work has been done peacefully and within the constraints of international law. However, the government has not taken kindly to the criticisms that Rodiles has laid upon them. He must be released immediately and be allowed to continue his important human rights work in Cuba.

On the day of his arrest, Rodiles was attempting to seek answers regarding the arrest of fellow activist and journalist Yaremis Flores. Rodiles and a group of other human rights activists went to the Department of State Security headquarters to ask about her condition and whereabouts. Before reaching the building the small group was accosted by a larger force and thrown into vehicles and taken away to different prisons across Havana. Since the arrest, all of the activists have been released except for Antonio Rodiles.

Sign this petition to call for the immediate release of Antonio Rodiles. He must be allowed to peacefully advocate for the advancement of human rights in Cuba. By allowing important activists such as Rodiles to openly operate, Cuba will take a large step towards becoming a larger part of the international community.

Dear President Raul Castro Ruz,

Human rights activist Antonio Rodiles who has been arrested and charged with “resisting authority.” However, no date for a trial has been set. If there are no proper grounds for the charges I ask that you release him immediately and unconditionally.

Doing this will be a step towards ensuring the rights of all your citizens. Cuba must cease the harassment of activists who are trying to voice their concerns about the state of human rights in your country.

Ensuring the freedom of expression in Cuba will be a large step towards becoming a larger part of the international community. Release Antonio Rodiles and show the world that you are serious about improving the human rights record of Cuba.
