Do Not Deprive Low-Income Households of Internet Access

Target: Ajit Pai, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Goal: Reverse decision to roll back Lifeline, the phone and internet service for low income families.

Internet access will become limited for low income households following a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) vote. By a margin of 3-2, the FCC decided to curtail the Lifeline program, which provides phone and internet services to low income family homes, and stated that the decision would help reduce “waste, fraud and abuse.” However, critics argue that this is based on outdated research and that the rollback will, in fact. inhibit the effectiveness of the program. It is also likely to disproportionately affect minority communities.

The rollback will transition Lifeline over to state jurisdiction, while also imposing a spending cap on the program, removing a subsidy for those residing on tribal land, and barring telecom providers and other ‘re-sellers’ from offering Lifeline to customers who inquire. The spending cap alone could render the program ineffective by limiting its resources, and the re-seller ban could stop customers from outsourcing telecommunication providers that would have provided support for the program. As Representative Gregory Meeks says, “This fits into the narrative where we vilify the poor.” Sign below to demand that this dangerous and discriminatory decision be overturned and the rights of low-income communities to access information and communication be restored.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Pai,

Access to phone and internet service is a basic human right, and it is unacceptable to deprive low income or minority communities of that right by rolling back the Lifeline program. Research showing “waste” and “abuse” of the program is outdated and does not justify the devastating effects this rollback could have on low income families.

Lifeline’s effectiveness would be significantly inhibited by imposing a spending cap and banning re-sellers. It would severely limit the options for low income households and curtail their ability to access these services at all. Additionally, the new policy is discriminatory, hitting minority communities the hardest. I urge you to reverse the callous decision to roll back Lifeline.

Sincerely,
